Hello everyone,
Happy New year to you all.
For those of you that do not know, my name is Barry Joyce. I was elected as Union President in a later than usual December election and started on January 2nd.
I just want to give the membership a brief overview of what is happening in CUPE 5791 currently.
We are working on elections for our executive officers and Committee members which will be coming up on February 5th. This vote usually takes place during the November meeting, so we are playing a bit of catch up here. The February agenda along with the positions to be filled were sent out. Further details about the meeting will be sent out before the meeting.
We are in discussions to change our general meetings to Hybrid (online and in person) as this is needed for our union. This will allow for more inclusion from all our groups who cannot attend in person meetings, however this will take time as it requires a bylaw change.
This brings me to our bylaws, they are in need of updating, including the online meetings as they have been the same since 2014, our board are meeting soon, with our CUPE National Rep, to discuss this and get the ball rolling to finish what was started in 2022 and add what we need to bring it up to date.
Our Think Tank (budget meeting) which usually happens in December , will be happening in mid February and we will present our budget at the March general membership meeting. The meeting is a little late this year as our Treasurer is away for all of January, she is a key member during the Think tank meeting, therefore we cannot have the meeting any sooner.
I want to point out our Treasurers holidays were booked ahead of time; she had no idea we would be in this position in January, and she has completed work for the union on holidays.
