Presidential Candidate Bios:
Doreen Thompson:
I have had the privilege of working at the University of Regina for 14 years. I started as an Administrative Assistant in the English Department in the Faculty of Arts. During my time in Arts I supported many departments including, History, Philosophy and Classics, and International Languages. Recently, I had the opportunity to move to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, becoming the Scholarships and Awards Specialist.
Early in my career, I became actively involved in the union by joining the Good and Welfare Committee. Later I served on the Clerical Committee before stepping into the role of 2nd Vice President and a member of the Joint Review Appeal Committee. Currently, I am a member of the Clerical Committee.
Serving on the executive has allowed me to appreciate the issues facing our various bargaining units. My combined experiences at the university have given me the skills needed to be an effective leader for CUPE 5791. My dedication to CUPE 5791 has deepened my knowledge of union operations and advocacy. I am committed to representing and supporting our members to the best of my ability.
Thank you,
Doreen Thompson
James Batalha
I first become employed at the University of Regina in 2016 as a plumber for Facilities Management. I worked in Facilities management until I moved into interim President of CUPE 5791 in May of this year.
A few years into my employment I became involved with the union and have been ever since. I have also been on the Universities OH&S committee since I started at the university until I begun my current role. Previous to that I served as the President of R.E United Soccer Club.
While I have limited experience in this role I firmly believe that the experience and insight I have gained while in this role, combined with my previous experience as the President of R.E. United as well as serving on the OH&S committee, make me a qualified candidate to continue to fulfill this role. My priority is and always will be serving the best interest of you and the local. I have always been committed to fighting for the needs of the membership as a whole and will continue to do so if given the opportunity.
Thank you and in solidarity,
James Batalha
Barry Joyce
Hi everyone, my name is Barry Joyce and I’m one of your candidates for Union President.
I promise I’ll keep this short, I am currently the union shop steward for Facilities Management and my beautiful wife Helen is currently the union secretary. We have a very beautiful eight year old daughter Aishling .
We are Irish immigrants to Canada arriving in 2013 and became proud citizens while I worked at the UofR I am just going into (I think) my 8th year at the university as a Carpenter in FM.
I’m running because I believe our union needs someone with thick skin a strong voice and a strong work ethic as President to give the union direction. Please come out and vote for which ever candidate you think makes sense on November 20th.
